I understand if you're a paid care aid for people & your duties include driving them to places you've never even heard of, or if you're a surveyor or a search & rescue worker, that a mobile based mapping & directions tool might make sense for you to use and likewise if you've a disability or multiple ones that make reading & following a problem, but beyond those case sets, I see the rest of their use as an element of societal decay, not of "technological advancement".
This isn't a "defense" of or at all, but it is a reason why I don't really advocate for the "degoogled alternatives" of apps, because believe that the merging of GPS mapping systems with all phones was a step backwards for people. *By all means have it as an option, but just as touchscreens aren't good for everyone, neither is GPS.
